'Het langste jaar' is de eerste single van de gelijknamige zesde langspeler van Het Zesde Metaal. Zanger Wannes Cappelle schreef het lied naar aanleiding van de herdenking van de sterfdag van een familielid. Door de ongeneeslijke ziekte waar muzikant Tom Pintens aan leed, werd het ongewild ook het meest passende lied dat de overige bandleden op diens begrafenis konden spelen. Een automatische piano zette er de exacte pianopartij neer die Pintens als producer nog zelf in de studio opnam.
